How To Make Your Credit Card Work For You

Even though politics isn’t one of my great priorities in life, it was hard not to be shaken by the recent Brexit vote. To what extent it will end up affecting the majority of individuals like us remains to be seen, but all the talk of recessions and downturns does make you take stock. All we can do at home is ensure that our household finances are as stable and healthy as possible.

The big one which seems to be a problem is debt, and Brits are quietly slipping further and further into a dangerous spiral, and living beyond their means. It’s interesting to note that there is such a stigma surrounding taking out a loan, yet when it comes to credit cards, many are willing to swipe or tap away at the plastic without much consideration.

The irony of this is that credit cards, although convenient, are typically very expensive if you simply make minimum repayments each month. APRs are usually 20 per cent or more, which is a much higher interest rate than you’ll generally get on a personal loan if your credit rating is sound.

Using your credit card to your advantage

Of course, credit cards can be a force for good too. First of all, using them (and paying them off) is actually vital to building a good credit score. But the more appealing perk is undoubtedly the rewards many providers are throwing at us in order to attract business. Some are offering great cashback deals every time you spend, while many others are offering things like vouchers, free travel insurance and significant discounts on a variety of purchases.

There is no reason not to make the most of such benefits, and popping your ordinary expenditure on your credit card as opposed to debit card won’t cause any harm – provided you ensure that you clear the balance each month. Because if not, the interest you’ll need to pay will likely far outweigh any rewards you’ve enjoyed. After all, these credit card companies are out to make a profit from us.

Cheesey Courgette Fritters with Cathedral City Cheddar

I will hold my hands up, I am a cheese lover!

I simply adore a good cheese and love how cheese can transform a meal in minutes and, with my children, when cheese is added they will eat anything!

Cathedral City, the nations favourite cheese, have recently started their "Love Cheese? Join the Club" campaign. The campaign features adverts that state the rules of cheese. Here is an example of just one rule...

Being a family of cheese lovers we often have arguments over who gets the nacho with the most cheese! Cathedral City have come up with a list of cheese rules. I thought I would share some of them with you along with my cheesey confessions...
  • The bit of cheese that is too awkward to grate must be eaten - This is one that I always follow!
  • Crispy bits are irresistible, absolutely no effort should be made to resist - I will admit to often pinching those bits before serving dinner!
  • You might feel guilty after multiple visits to the cheeseboard, don't! - I never feel guilty for enjoying a good cheeseboard and enjoy it even more with a glass of wine!
For me and my family cheese is an essential product that is always found in our fridge. Adding distinctive, smooth and creamy Cathedral City to a dish is the perfect way to get reluctant children eating a a meal. It is amazing what some melted cheese can do! Whether it is grated on top of a cottage pie, added to fajitas or melted onto a pasta bake, cheese adds something special to a meal.

Today I am going to share a quick and easy dish that is perfect for a light lunch or to serve with jacket potatoes and salad for an evening meal.

Steak Pie

Who doesn't love a good pie? Pie has to be one of the best comfort foods and it is one of my hubby's favourite meals. I know that pie is a perfect winter time meal but we also enjoy pies as an alternative to a Sunday roast. The recipe that I am sharing with you today is what I made on Father's Day.

The five ingredients, pictured above, combine together to make a truly delicious pie filling. I recently discovered that Aldi stock some fantastic mixed herb grinder pots from Stonemill. For this recipe I have used the garlic, herb and tomato seasoning grinder. These little, full of flavour, pots are an ideal way to add extra flavours to your dishes in a perfectly balanced way.

Slow cooking the pie filling in either a slow cooker or in the oven as I did leaves you with lovely tender meat and you can prepare it and leave it to cook while you spend time with your family.

Weekly Meal Plan - Week Commencing 27th June 2016

What a fantastic weekend in London! But now it is back to the grind and definitely back to healthy eating. The clock is ticking down to our big summer holiday and I would still like to loose about a stone in weight! Is this possible in 7 weeks? Yes I think so. From now until our cruise I am going to be super good so that I can feel confident when I put on my swimsuit and laze around the pool!

I am not attending a slimming class but I am going to follow the Slimming World plan with a few of my own adjustments like including healthy fats such as avocado and nuts in moderation. I do find losing weight hard. I am at a stage in my life where I am happy so being thin is not one of my priorities anymore and for me, this is a huge step! But I do not wear a swimsuit all the time! Healthy eating here I come!!!

This is what we will be enjoying this week...

Week Commencing 27th June 2016

Monday - Courgette Frittata and Jacket Potatoes

This was a meal that was planned for last week and I did not make. As we have quite a few eggs to use up we will be starting the week with a meat free dish.

Tuesday - Chicken Fajitas

I will be making chicken fajitas with roasted vegetables and rice but I will be having mine without the wraps.

Juice Review - Parragon Love Food

I love receiving cook books to review ans this month was not exception. This month's book from Parragon was Juice.

Juice

This handy sized book contains over 100 nutritious juice and smoothie recipes. It contains 7 chapters including an introduction to juicing and smoothie making. The introduction gives you all of the hints and tips that you may need as well as advising on equipment that is needed. So if you are new to making juices and smoothies then this book is the ideal way to start!

Following the introduction the book is divided into 6 further chapters. Each chapter is full of juices that do different jobs for your body. They are:
  • Energy
  • Rehydrate
  • Nourish
  • Glow
  • Soothe
  • Detox
Now selecting a recipe to tell you about was the hard part. This book is full of deliciously healthy juices and smoothies. I eventually settled on a refreshing drink. Today is quite muggy so I went for a drink that will really quench my thirst.

Lime and White Chocolate Cake

For this week Aldi post I thought that I would share a delicious cake that I made on Fathers Day using the deliciously creamy Moser Roth Madagascan Vanilla Chocolate. But before I share my recipe with you, I want to tell you some news from Aldi!

Last week saw The Grocer Gold Awards 2016 take place. Aldi walked away with not just one award, but two! They were awarded The Grocer of the Year 2016 and Own Label Range of the Year for their baby brand Mamia. The judges acknowledged that Aldi offer responsibly sourced, quality products at the lowest possible price. This allows families to enjoy more for less!

The Chief Executive Officer, Matthew Barnes, said "We're absolutely thrilled to have been named The Grocer of the Year 2016. This recognition gives customers assurance that Aldi is the best supermarket in Britain." Read more about the awards and the full statement here.

Congratulations Aldi on your awards and here is to many more!

Now on to cake!

I love the combination of lime and white chocolate. The creamy chocolate compliments the bitter lime perfectly.
