We were recently invited to visit The Deep in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire. We do not live far from Hull so we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to have a day out as a family.
The Deep is one of the worlds most spectacular and deepest aquariums in the world. After opening in 2002 it has attracted over 4,000,000 visitors. It is not only an award winning attraction but is also the countries most successful millennium project!
If you do not know Hull, The Deep is really easy to find as it is clearly sign posted all the way from the Humber Bridge. We visited on a Saturday and when we arrived the car park was very busy. We also did not realise that the car park would be pay and display but thankfully we had some change for the ticket. So if you do visit go prepared!
When we entered the building we were greeted by the big welcome sign and beautiful dolphin statues hanging from the ceiling.
The Deep is divided into 11 zones:
To get to the start of the exhibition you must go to the top of the building. There is both lift and stair access. As it was busy we decided to take the stairs! The children were all excited to get the start of the exhibition and see the fish. The twins did rush from one exhibition to the other and at the beginning there is a lot of written information that they did get bored with. However Joseph, who is 10, was a lot more interested in what the information was and he wanted to take his time and read the signs and try the various quizzes and educational games. Unfortunately the twins did not want to wait and wanted to be straight off the see the main aquarium, the Endless Ocean. Therefore Joseph did get rushed so we have said that we will return another time without the twins so that we can spend the time reading all of the information with Joseph.

When we arrived at the Endless Ocean the twins loved seeing the fish. The huge tank is home to 3 different species of shark, whiptailray, stingray, sawfish and moray eels along with different fish species. The tank is truly spectacular, with it being on such a grand scale you can easily sit looking in awe at the sealife for a long time. The down side was that it was so busy. In hindsight we should have chosen a sunny day, whereas we went on a wet day which I am sure are their busiest times! I wish we had gone at a quieter time so that we could fully appreciate the amazing sealife.
Without a doubt the twins favourite part was the Kingdom of Ice. They loved the sensory experience of the wall of ice and absolutely adored the penguins. They stood watching the penguins, giggling and talking about what they were doing.
As a family what did we think of The Deep?
If I am completely honest I think that the twins were too young to truly enjoy the day. They were not interested in the written information and simply wanted to be off! There was a soft play area but we could not get near it as it was so busy. However for children of Joseph's age it was perfect. He was really interested in all of the information and wanted to learn about what he was seeing. We will definitely be returning with Joseph on his own and again when the twins are older. The Deep really is a fascinating place to visit and I would definitely recommend visiting with older children. Also if you gift aid your entry fee you can visit as many times as you wish for 12 months!
The Deep is open daily from 10am until 6pm with last admissions at 5pm. The Deep also has a lovely cafe situated on the third floor so you can really take your time at the attraction by having some food half way round! On a clear day the cafe offers stunning views over the Humber.
