a2 Milk on Food Unwrapped

Last Friday I told you how a2Milk was being featured on Channel 4's Food Unwrapped.

If you missed it I thought that I would let you know what you missed and what Food Unwrapped found out about a2 milk.

Before I go on let me tell you a bit about a2 Milk and what the difference between regular milk and a2 Milk is.

Cows milk contains two different types of protein, A1 and A2. Cows milk originally contained only the A2 protein, however over the years A1 has become more dominant protein in milk. This is the protein which some people find hard to digest, hence the rise in allergies and intolerance.

a2 Milk contains, as it's name states, the A2 protein. Therefore people who have struggled with regular milk should find that they are able to drink this milk without any discomfort.

On Food Unwrapped they investigated how a2 Milk is actually made. They visited the Welsh farm of Farmer Dewi Jones. At this farm they have a herd of cows that supply a2 Milk. To produce the A2 cows they artificially inseminate cows with A2 semen from a bull. So the A2 cows are genetically different from standard cows. After finding out how the cows produce a2 Milk they went on to Reading University where they interviewed Professor Givens and Lindy Moors, who suffers with digestive discomfort when drinking regular milk. After years of digestive problems it was assumed that Lindy was lactose intolerant. However when they tested her on the show it showed that Lindy was not lactose intolerant. Lindy recently discovered a2Milk and has been able to drink it without suffering and discomfort. Therefore it is assumed that it is the A1 protein that she had the problem with. a2 Milk has enabled Lindy to drink cows milk again. Professor Givens confirmed that people can have a range of intolerance's to milk that are not just lactose.

There are still further studies being conducted but so far they have shown that by taking out the A1 protein more people can go back to drinking cows milk without worrying about discomfort.

If you think you may be lactose intolerant it is always advisable that you consult a doctor. But if you do find regular milk hard to digest but are not lactose intolerant, it could be the A1 protein that is effecting you!

I have been drinking a2 Milk instead of nut based milks and have felt fine. I am not lactose intolerant but do feel better using non dairy milk. a2 Milk looks and tastes just like regular milk so all the family can drink it. I do not need to buy different milks to suit everyone.

a2 Milk is available in both fresh and long life milk and in whole, semi skimmed and skimmed milk. It is available in most retailers but you can find exactly where to find it here.

Keep an eye out as I am going to be sharing my rice pudding recipe soon using a2 Milk!
