Classically Sweet Oat Bars with Team GB and Aldi

Last week I told you how Aldi are Team GB's official supermarket sponsor for this years Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I shared with you the first of three delicious recipes that have been created with the help of nutritionists from the English Institute of Sport.and today I am sharing the second, Classically Sweet Oat Bars.

Today's recipe is perfectly practical for long days training and when athletes are competing and need energy on the go. These oat bars contain carbohydrates and provide a fast fuel to not only support performance for athletes but are also for us busy mums who need an extra boost! They are rich in micro nutrients that support general health and immune systems.

The beauty of today's recipe is that it is so versatile. If you have children who do not like raisins, like one of mine, simply substitute them with chocolate chips. If you want more of a sweeter bar add some honey. The possibilities with these bars are endless and so delicious trying new ingredients!

This is what I did...

Classically Sweet Oat Bars

Ingredients

120g Aldi Everyday Essentials porridge oats
35g almonds with the skin on
30g milled linseed
18g raisins
18g sultanas
1tsp cumin seeds, either whole or ground
2g sea salt
250mls semi skimmed milk

Method

Pre heat the oven to 180C

1 - Place the dry ingredients in a bowl and pour over the milk

2 - Mix thoroughly, cover and leave for about 10 minutes to allow the milk to soak in

3 - Prepare an 8 inch square tin by lining with baking paper and greasing the sides, I used Aldi's own coconut oil which at just £2.99 is fantastically priced!

4 - Pour the oat mixture into the prepared tin and place in the centre of the pre heated oven and bake for 30 - 35 minutes

5 - Once golden remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before removing from the tin and leaving to cool on a cooling rack

6 - Slice into chunks and enjoy

The above recipe creates more of a savoury snack. If you prefer more of a sweet oat bar I recommend using the ingredients listed below and follow the same method as before.

Sweet Oat Bars Ingredients

120g porridge oats
35g almonds, skin on
30g milled linseed
20g raisins/sultanas
20g cranberries
1tsp ground cinnamon
3tbsp Aldi Specially Selected Manuka type honey
3tbsp Aldi Specially Selected maple syrup
250mls semi skimmed milk

I am planning to make a few variations of these delicious bars so keep an eye out for future recipes!

When following the original recipe each 30g serving contains just 65 calories which is significantly lower than pre made shop bought oat bars. Plus you can adapt them to your own taste the possibilities are endless!

  7. I always think of oaty bars as being a fairly dry mix so am really intrigued by the milk addition! I like the idea of both sweet and savoury versions, definitely something to expand my oaty repertoire!
