#MorrisonsMum - Smoked Paprika and Red Pepper Pulled Pork

When I went to Morrisons this week I decided to try their Market Street Butchers. As we were not sure if we would be lucky with the weather for a BBQ I decided to make one of our favourite meals, pulled pork.

I was pleased to see that the pork shoulder was included in their latest price cuts.

Next to the pork shoulder was highly visible yellow sign saying "I'm Cheaper!". What was even better was the amount that the pork shoulder had been reduced by! The pork shoulder was reduced from £5.49 per kg to just £2.99! I got a 1.725kg joint for just £5.16! That was even cheaper than the local market!


One of the reasons that we love pulled pork is due to the amount of meat that comes from a joint. There are always leftovers for us to enjoy another day!

I usually rub herbs onto the pork shoulder before placing in the slow cooker. However whilst I was looking at the herbs and spices I noticed that Morrisons sell ready mixed herb and spice meat rubs for pork, beef and chicken.

I chose Morrisons Smoked Paprika and Red Pepper rub to add a "kick of smoky sweetness" to the meal.

To accompany the pulled pork I made a homemade coleslaw and we filled Morrisons freshly baked rolls with the delicious moist meat.

This is what I did...

Smoked Paprika and Red Pepper Pulled Pork

Ingredients

Pulled Pork

Pork Shoulder, my joint weighed 1.725kg (£5.16)
Morrisons Smoked Paprika and Red Pepper Rub (£1.49)


Coleslaw

6 - 8 leaves of white cabbage, shredded (38p)
1 red onion, sliced (17p)
1 carrot, grated (7p)
Mayonnaise (89p - 500mls)
Black pepper


To Serve

Bread rolls (£1 for 2 packs of 6 rolls)
Potatoes for chips (£2 per 2.5kg)


Method

1 - Take the piece of pork shoulder and generously rub in the smoked paprika and red pepper rub. I used half of the tub.

 
2 - Place the joint into the slow cooker at  high heat for and hour and then reduce to a low heat and cook for a further 7 hours.

3 - To make the coleslaw mix the shredded cabbage, grated carrots and onions together.

4 - Add as little or as much mayonnaise as you like and a sprinkling of black pepper to season.

5 - Once the meat is cooked, remove from the slow cooker. Place the meat on a warm plate and shred it using two forks.

I served this deliciously smoky, sweet meat with freshly baked bread rolls, homemade chips and coleslaw. It made a great alternative to a BBQ and was enjoyed just as much!

All of the ingredients that were used for this meal came to £11.16.

The shoulder of pork gave us 5 servings on the buffet, 6 servings for lunch the following day and I have frozen enough meat to use on a different day. The leftover meat will make a meal to serve all 5 of us. That is a massive 16 servings for £5.16, that is a budgeting 32p per serving!

For the buffet I only used half of the jar of mayonnaise, half of the bag of potatoes, half of the rub and 6 bread rolls. So I am left with food for some other meals!

I have calculated the cost for this buffet and thanks to Morrisons price cuts it only cost 98p per serving!

The food was excellent quality at an excellent price!
